Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence and London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education. A global elite, top 150 institution, we encourage applications from students without traditional qualifications. Nearly 18,000 students studied at Birkbeck in 2010-2011 (4,683 undergraduates, 5,075 postgraduates, and 8,064 certificate students).

principal aims

  • Provide part-time higher education courses which meet the changing educational, cultural, personal and career needs of adults; in particular those who live or work in the London region.
  • Enable adult students from diverse social and educational backgrounds to participate in our courses.
  • Maintain and develop excellence in research and provide the highest quality research training in all our subject areas.
  • Make available the results of research, and the expertise acquired, through teaching, publication, partnerships with other organisations and the promotion of civic and public debate.

English Requirements

General requirements for undergraduate, postgraduate and MPhil/PhD courses

  • IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each of the sub tests) Please note we only accept the Academic, not the General Test.
  • Pearsons PTE Academic test: 60 (with at least 60 in each sub test)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English Pass at Grade C
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English Pass at Grade B
  • Please note: the Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life or TOEIC qualifications would not normally be accepted.

Requirements for courses in Arts Policy, English Literature, Law and Psychology

  • IELTS 7.0 (with 6.0 in each of the sub tests, Arts Policy requires a minimum of 7.0 in all sub-tests)
  • Pearsons PTE Academic test: 67 (with at least 67 in each sub test)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Pass at Grade B
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Pass at Grade A
  • Please note: the Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life or TOEIC qualifications would not normally be accepted.

Please note, ETS TOEFL tests are no longer accepted by the UK Border Agency and therefore Birkbeck is unable to accept this as suitable evidence of English ability for entry onto our courses. Please contact the International Student Administration team if you require further information on the tests we do accept.


Scholarships

Eric Hobsbawm Postgraduate Scholarships

  • Two full fee waiver scholarships will be awarded for MA study in the department of History, Classics and Archaeology.
  • New and existing PhD students in the department of History, Classics and Archeology can apply for financial assistance for research expenses. 

International Office Merit Scholarships

  • Unlimited number of scholarships (£2,000) for applicants from Thailand,Vietnam and India whose GPAs meet scholarship criteria.

Gordon Square International Awards: Two full or partial fee waivers, full-time or part-time, for outstanding international (non-EU) MA students.

Financial support for MPhil/PhD students

  • A range of Scholarships and Research Studentships are offered each year for students wishing to study MPhil/PhD programmes. The amount of the award and requirements will vary each year.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

  • The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is a merit and needs-based scholarship scheme aimed at students from developing Commonwealth countries.

Santander Scholarships

  • Birkbeck is offering three £5000 scholarships to Brazilian students who will be studying at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at Birkbeck in 2014.
