Overview

The future of any city starts with its youth. A strong education and confidence are two of the most important things a child can receive.

As part of education, exposing children to the performing arts creates invaluable benefits that extend into their adult years. Studies show that more than 90 percent of adults believe the performing arts are important in a well-rounded education — not because they want their children to work in the theater, but because they believe the arts are essential in creating well-rounded human beings.

Research also shows students in the performing arts across the board have higher SAT scores than those who participate in academics alone. Infusing art into education also helps communication skills and reading comprehension, two important skills that can be translated into myriad future careers.

Children who, by circumstances, are statistically more likely to fail academically and eventually drop out have been labeled “at-risk students.” The at-risk children who have gone on to graduate cite their involvement in performing arts as motivation to go to school every day.

Whether it is playing in the marching band or high-kicking with the dance team, being involved in the performing arts also provides an outlet to explore their creative abilities. They carry this appreciation for the arts with them throughout their lives. The arts are essential in keeping our children from becoming another statistic.
